It's a very simple way to give you the boost you need
There is one way you can get motivated to do something you may be putting off that most people aren’t aware of until they actually put this into practice. It’s potent and can make a real difference in the results that you get.
The secret is – to just get started. If you don’t know where to start, start somewhere. But just start taking some form of action towards what you want to accomplish.
This is especially vital if part of why starting the task seems daunting is because it seems excessively big, and that it would be a huge undertaking. No one said that you have to do everything in one swoop. For example, if the task in question is to clean out a large pile of junk from your home, don’t believe that you have to clear out the entire load at one time. Just start with one box. If you feel like clearing out another box, have at it. If not, just tackle it tomorrow. But starting somewhere is better than never starting.
Take large goals step by step
Let’s look at a common goal that people tend to give a half-hearted effort towards – weight loss. Some people have a large amount of weight to lose, and when they look out on the horizon at your dream body, you’ll immediately feel discouraged. They don’t realize that it’s the long view that is causing their feelings. This is a distorted view, as there are many small milestones that are missed when you look on the horizon. You can’t see the small victories that come from small steps when you’re focused on the distant end.
So, draw back your focus. Focus on losing 5 pounds rather than 50. This is much more manageable and easier to pull off. Then focus on the next 5 pounds after that.
The late Stephen Covey stressed the importance of keeping the end in mind. I would argue that it’s at least just as important to choose the end that fills you with hope rather than despair. Focusing on the smaller milestones and taking smaller steps will give you confidence and will make you much more motivated to accomplish what you’d like to.
Large goals are accomplished with the sweat of reaching the smaller milestones along the way. Start small, and start somewhere. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to start.
